Permission Numbers
What is a Permission Number?
A Permission Number is an add code supplied by the course instructor or department office to allow students to enroll in courses with specific enrollment restrictions. These numbers enable students to override certain conditions that may otherwise prevent registration. Permission Numbers are typically required in the following situations:
- Closed Class (Seat Capacity) Permissions: In cases where classes have reached capacity, a Permission Number allows students to enroll in a class that is full or be added to the waitlist. This is only available during the add/drop period.
- Instructor or department consent (class permission) is required: Some courses have restricted access and require instructor or departmental approval.
- Requisites need to be met (pre-requisites or co-requisites): Permission Numbers can override requisite not met, helping students enroll even if certain pre-requisite or co-requisite requirements are pending.
- Student Specific Permissions: For courses intended for particular cohorts or individual students, Permission Numbers can be used to control enrollment.
Note: The permission number does not override unit cap limits or scheduling conflicts. Students who wish to exceed the unit cap or need to resolve a scheduling conflict must complete a Petition to Exceed Unit Cap or a Petition for Schedule Conflict Override. For more details, refer to the Form section.
How to Issue a Permission Number
Permission Numbers are generally issued by either the course instructor or the Department Office. Once issued, students can use these numbers to enroll in BroncoDirect during the online registration period. The Scheduling team provides a how to generate permission numbers training to department schedulers. Department Administrative Coordinators may connect with the Scheduling team via email at scheduling@cpp.edu for assistance when needed. Refer to the Class Permission Numbers Guide (PDF) on how to access the class permission numbers.
When are Permission Numbers Generated?
Permission Numbers are generated based on the type of restriction they are intended to override:
- Class Permissions, Requisites Not Met, Instructor/Department Consent: These numbers are generated by the Department Office and are available starting the Priority Registration Period. Faculty and staff can refer to the guide for detailed instructions on generating Class Permission Numbers Guide (PDF).
- Closed Class (Seat Capacity) Permissions: These numbers are generated by the Registrar’s Office. For classes that are full, the Registrar’s Office generates Permission Numbers on the first day of the Add/Drop period. Course instructors may then issue these numbers to the students as needed to allow enrollment in the closed class or to add students to the waitlist.
Important Note on Permission Numbers for Closed Classes:
Permission numbers issued to bypass seat capacity are valid only during the Add/Drop period and expire on the last day to add classes. Faculty and staff should remind students to check the Academic Calendar for exact deadlines.
